Comparing the Summarization Features of Summarizer.org and ChatGPT Summarizer

Summarizing a text means shortening the length of a text without changing its meaning. Today, there are many tools available online that you can use to summarize your texts.

Although, for this post, we will discuss these two tools: ChatGPT and AI summarizer from summarizer.org. We will see their summarization features and how each tool functions (in detail.)

Finally, we will compare the outputs to conclude the best tool for summarization.

So, without waiting any longer, let’s get started!

Experimenting with Summarizer.org and ChatGPT

Below is a step-by-step process for summarizing your text from both tools.

·         Summarizer.org

The summarizer tool from summarizer.org is based on an advanced AI engine and is free to use. It requires no login or sign-up, so you can get going from the word go.

Here are the relevant steps you should follow to summarize your texts from this tool.

  • Select and upload the relevant text

First, find an appropriate text that you want to summarize. For our work example, we have chosen the following text:

Next, upload the text to the online tool. Go to the summarizer.org website, and here’s what you will see:

Paste the aforementioned text in the box (see the red arrow.) You can also upload a file from your device to get it summarized.

  • Choose the desired summary length

Then, choose an appropriate summary length for your summarized text (see the yellow arrow.) Here’s how the interface will look like after you have pasted the text in the box:

Now, you can click the black ‘Summarize’ button (blue arrow) to get your results.

  • Extract the results

Finally, it’s time to collect the results. For our example, we left the summary length to 40% (the default value.)

Then, after you have pressed the ‘Summarize’ button, you’ll get the following results:

Extract the results

In addition to the summary length feature, summarizer.org has another option (orange arrow.) This is to choose between the ‘AI Summarizer’ or ‘AI Summarizer 2.0’ mode.

The 2.0 mode is an advanced version of the basic variant. It automatically sets the most suitable word length for your summary.

Here’s the same text summarized with the 2.0 version:

You can notice that we have two additional options for summarizing a text (see the purple and green arrows.) These options are “Show Bullets” and “Best Line”, respectively. Let’s understand what these buttons do.

The show bullets option makes bullet points for the summarized text. This will help you understand the logical flow of events in the source text.

Clicking the ‘show bullets’ button gives us the following results:

Now, coming to the ‘best line’ button. This feature provides us with a line from the original text that boils down the whole situation/scenario to a one-liner. Following our example, here is the result we get if we click the best line button (green arrow):

AI tool

As you can see, this one line best explains the whole situation in the original text with just 11 words! It’s truly impressive how the AI tool can manage to explain long pieces of text using just one-liners.

You can experiment with this mode and find the best one-liners for your product descriptions, YouTube tags, social media posts, and much more.

·         ChatGPT

Now, let’s see how you can summarize content with the ChatGPT chatbot:

  • Paste the relevant text to the chat

We will continue using our sample text as before. Go to the main page of OpenAI. Here, you will be asked to either login or sign up for the website. After you are done, a main chat interface will open up in front of you. Here’s how it should look:

Then, paste the sample text in the chat area (grey arrow.) This is how it will look like after we have pasted the text in the chat:

  • Choose and write the correct prompt

This is the most crucial step when extracting a summarized text from ChatGPT. Give the AI model a suitable prompt (command) to summarize your text. Otherwise, you will not get your expected answer.

The command we will use is: “Summarize. Don’t explain.” The main reason for typing the “don’t explain” part in the prompt is to get a shortened version of the text and not its explanation.

This is a common problem with ChatGPT that it starts explaining the author’s POV for a text, without actually shortening the length of the text. Hence, never give a general prompt to the chatbot, and always look to specify what you want for better answers.

Anyways, this is how the chat box should look like after you write your prompt in the command line:

  • Extract the results

Finally, press the enter button on your keyboard, or click the ‘send’ button (see the maroon arrow) to get your summary. Here’s what the result will look like:

Extract the results

As we can see, just like summarizer.org, our process with ChatGPT was also really quick and snappy. We got our results with convenience, without any hiccups in the summarization process.

However, there are many differences in the approach and working of both AI-based tools. Let’s compare the results for summarizer.org and ChatGPT to understand their differences.

Comparing the Results for Summarizer.org and ChatGPT

As we saw throughout our document, both AI-based tools are efficient in providing summaries of a text. However, summarizer.org provides some additional benefits for summarizing a text:

  • Summary length feature
  • ‘Best line’ button
  • ‘Show bullets’ option

·         Discussion on ChatGPT

ChatGPT is a general tool that is not centered on the sole purpose of providing summaries. It is a chatbot that answers a wide range of people’s questions.

So, if you want specific answers from a general tool, you need to come up with exact prompts. And coming up with such prompts is a tiring and time-consuming process.

Furthermore, ChatGPT writes in a very robotic tone. It gives answers with difficult-to-comprehend vocabulary, which kind of fails the whole purpose of a summary.

However, if your purpose with the text is to get its author’s POV (point-of-view), then you can use the ChatGPT tool. It will break down the story and background behind the given text, which can help you understand the context of words and why they were used.

·         Discussion on Summarizer.org

Analyzing the summaries from both tools, we can see that the AI summarizer’s result was written in a more conversational tone. It used words that were easier to understand for a common reader, making the work more engaging and interesting.

By no means do we claim that summarizer.org is an ‘all-in-all’ better tool than the ChatGPT AI model. We are just saying that it’s a niche tool that works to fulfill the sole purpose of writing summaries.

Thus, there’s no competition between the AI summarizer and ChatGPT when it comes to summarization features.

However, there are many other avenues where ChatGPT takes the lead. It has a variety of use cases like paraphrasing, improving coherence, or adjusting vocabulary for a text.

It can also be extremely helpful for coders, artists, students, etc., to get creative ideas for their work. All of this makes ChatGPT a very popular chatbot that people from diverse backgrounds use to complete their day-to-day tasks.

Conclusion
